Life in the Holy Spirit

John 14:16–18
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

📖 Faith: My Choice or God’s Gift?

As we walk in faith, we may wonder: “How did I come to believe in Jesus?”
It is truly a miracle. Accepting that Jesus died for me on the cross is not easy.
That is why the confession “I was enabled to believe” is more accurate than “I believed.”
The reason we believe is explained in Scripture: it is the work of the Holy Spirit.

📖 The Benefit of Departure, the Promise of Coming

For the disciples, Jesus was everything. His departure felt like the end of the world.
Yet Jesus said:

“It is for your good that I am going away.” (John 16:7)

Why? Because only by leaving could He send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to be with them forever.

📖 Without the Spirit

Nicodemus, a learned man, could not understand Jesus’ words in John 3.
Jesus told him: “No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”

Scripture declares:

  • “No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)
  • “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.” (Romans 8:9)

Faith is entirely the work of the Spirit. We believe because the Spirit dwells in us.

📖 Who Is the “Another Advocate”?

Jesus called the Spirit “another Advocate.”
“Another” means another of the same kind. Jesus is the Advocate, and so is the Spirit.

  • Advocate (Parakletos): one who comes alongside to help and comfort.
  • Jesus: visible in the flesh, but limited by time and space.
  • Spirit: invisible, but unlimited, dwelling with all believers forever.

📖 Inner Conflict and the Spirit’s Victory

Our inner life is full of conflict:

“For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.” (Romans 7:19)

If Scripture ended at Romans 7, we would have no hope.
But Romans 8 begins with triumph:

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1–2)

The Spirit transforms despair into hope, defeat into victory.

📖 Never Alone

We often feel lonely, overwhelmed by self-pity.
But believers are never alone—the Spirit dwells with us and within us.

  • He is the greatest Comforter, the wisest Counselor, the perfect Healer.
  • He gives peace the world cannot give (John 14:27).
  • Even when we do not feel His presence, He remains in us.

The Spirit’s indwelling is truth, not dependent on our emotions.

📖 Spirit of Truth, Illuminator of Scripture

The Spirit is the “Spirit of truth.”
Human intellect alone cannot grasp Scripture. Nicodemus failed to understand, but children often receive it simply.

C.S. Lewis resisted Christianity intellectually, but surrendered when confronted by God’s overwhelming presence.
Without the Spirit, we cannot truly understand Scripture. (John 14:26)
The Spirit illuminates truth, guides us, and empowers us to live as witnesses of Christ.

✨ Conclusion: Walking with the Spirit

Do we take the Spirit’s presence for granted?
Christian life is nothing other than “daily life with the Spirit.”

  • Without Him, prayer, worship, and holiness are impossible.
  • Ignoring Him reduces faith to powerless religion.
  • We must trust, honor, and walk with the Spirit who never leaves us.

Let us open every part of our lives to Him and confess:

“I cannot live a single moment without the Holy Spirit.”

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
